Winston Churchill Road Bridge
This concept envisioned a light tunnel formed by a sequence of colored fins, operating almost like stained glass and taking advantage of the open sky above the roadway. Vertical trusses were to be clad in a combination of opaque and semi-opaque materials, forming a perforated screen along the bridge’s span. The diagonal members were arranged in a subtle gradient to intensify the sensation of speed for cyclists and pedestrians. Site visits revealed the rhythm of cycling traffic, inspiring a design that embraced velocity, light, and the shifting perception of movement.

For drivers, the view from below would create an oscillating pattern of light and shadow. Approaching perpendicularly offered a contrasting experience, with mirrored cladding on either side producing overlapping layers of color that appeared to twist around the structure. In the rear-view mirror, the bridge would reappear as a fleeting reflection, extending the experience beyond the crossing itself.

Derry Road Bridge
Paying homage to the area’s aquaculture, this concept featured metal flappers suspended within pre-constructed frames, a technique inspired by the work of Ned Kahn. The elements would move with the wind, producing subtle sound for those crossing the bridge while shimmering in the light for drivers below. The shifting surface suggested the glint and movement of fish scales, animating the structure through natural forces.
